Think North American ski resorts and Aspen immediately springs to mind. Long known as the place to ski and be seen, Aspen attracts serious crowds thanks to its range of ski terrain across the four surrounding mountains - Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk.

While Aspen has historically garnered the headlines, the real powerhouse is sister resort Snowmass, offering nearly five times more family-friendly skiable acres, registering a staggering 800,000 skiers annually. Now with a $3 billion sustainable redevelopment programme, history is about to change as new accommodation, fine dining, après-ski and entertainment venues debut this season offering a taste of what is to come in the new Snowmass.

The new Snowmass Base Village will include more than one million square feet of residential, hotel, restaurant, retail and children’s facilities, all strategically located at the entrance of a world-class ski and snowboard mountain. The first of these new fine dining restaurants, boutiques and ski-in / ski-out residences, will open in time for the 2008 / 2009 winter season.

More than $20 million in on-mountain improvements for the 2008/09 season concluding more than $70 million in on-mountain investments in the past three years. This winter, improvements include new gondolas and lifts and a chair lift that can carry 2,000 people an hour. Last season saw the opening of North America’s premier children’s facility, the 25,000 square-foot Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Centre. With interactive facilities for children ranging from three months old to 17 years old, The Treehouse is also home to the Kid’s Ski School.

Once completed, the new Base Village will include nearly 600 residences including the 236-room Viceroy Resort Residences at Snowmass, (which is being designed to be one of the first Silver LEED-certified hotels in America), The Little Nell Residences Snowmass and over 60,000 square feet of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, new conference space, an aquatic centre and additional amenities.

Sarah May-Brown, International Residential Developments, Knight Frank, commented: “We expect interest in the resurgence of Snowmass to be high.
“ Thanks to the strength of the pound, there is still a strong demand for prime US property in high value areas. An established and premier ski region coupled with five star brands and family-friendly service have proved a winning combination in the domestic market. Sales of the first release of The Little Nell Residences and Viceroy Resorts and Residences have been extremely strong, underscoring the demand for a premier product by a world-class developer in a prime location.”

Related Companies, the visionary developer behind New York’s iconic Time Warner Centre, has joined forces with local partner WestPac Investments to lead the redevelopment of 80 acres across Snowmass.

Jeff Blau, president, Related Companies, commented: “Snowmass is arguably the finest ski mountain in the world with thousands of acres of terrain for all levels of skiers and boarders and spectacular mountain vistas. The new Snowmass Base Village will now offer all of the amenities befitting a world-class resort destination – the first new accommodation in 20 years, stylish fine dining restaurants, après ski and exciting shopping opportunities, where visitors can stay and play in Snowmass after finishing their ski day. Snowmass now truly has something for everyone in the family including, The Treehouse, the biggest and most highly regarded children’s ski centre in the country. When guests experience Snowmass this winter, the buzz will be out about the new mountain destination, and this is only the beginning of a development that will include the finest residential offerings of any mountain resort, including The Little Nell Residences Snowmass and Viceroy Snowmass.”

The Little Nell Residences Snowmass will be managed by The Little Nell, recognised around the world as one of North America’s finest boutique hotels. Comprising 30 ski-in/ski-out fully owned residences, residents will benefit from 24-hour concierge services, 24-hour in-residence dining, 24-hour maid service, heated pool and hot tub, state-of-the-art fitness centre, a fine dining restaurant, an exclusive owner’s lounge, ski valet, private ski lockers, outdoor ski racks and indoor storage garage storage. Prices, for the current phase, range from $3,125,000 for a one bedroom residence to $8,750,000 for a three bedroom residence.
Viceroy Resorts and Residences is a well-known brand in America and is synonymous with luxury resorts. Viceroy Resorts and Residences at Snowmass will be an elegant mountain retreat in the inimitable Viceroy style. The 152-room ski-in/ski-out condominium hotel residences will offer a range of facilities including private dining rooms, bar and lounge, a spa, fitness centre, swimming pool and pool cafe, après ski bar, kids club, casual and fine dining restaurants, flexible conference space and ski valet. Prices, for the current phase, range from $555,000 for a studio to $4,950,000 for a three bedroom penthouse.
Snowmass is located seven miles from Aspen airport, a 45 minute flight from Denver airport (approximately a nine hour flight from London Heathrow).
